A Look At My Studio in Houston Heights
Something life changing happened to me in March 2020. My husband and I built out my very first studio space. And then the whole world shut down.
A lot has happened since then. Thank goodness that the world has begun to spin again and that space has gotten some good use out of it. It’s been truly life changing in so many ways.
For 11 years prior to having my own studio, I did newborn sessions in people’s own homes. I would load up my tiny little Honda Fit with bins full of backdrops and wraps. I would drove over to a clients’ home and spend a large amount of time unloading, displaying items (usually all over peoples couches and personal items), looking for “good light” in the home, and setting up my backdrop stand. By the time we took the photos, I packed up all of my bins and I loaded my car back up, everyone was exhausted. Everyone. I would get a very kind, but very weary “thank you, I can’t wait to see the pictures.”
I would go home and edit the photos and it would often be a challenge to edit them because I was a natural light photographer and the lighting would change from home to home (and sometimes hour to hour) based on the weather that day. There wasn’t a lot of consistency and sometimes the baby struggled to fall asleep because excited new siblings would want to sneak a peek or maybe would be crying outside of the locked door because they wanted to get some mama snuggles. Most of the time the photos were “fine” but often not what I hoped for.
Then something changed. I got my own studio space and things were instantly different, for the better. Older siblings magically behaved better b/c I was no longer on their turf. Babies slept better because I had more control over the environment and temperature. And the photos looked a million times better because I was using control strobe lighting. I didn’t have to worry that the session happened on an overcast day or the home didn’t have large enough windows for good lighting.
Most importantly, the parents left my studio HAPPY. Sessions were shorter, less exhausting and less invasive. I consistently get comments on how relaxing, easy or easy the process was. Words I hadn’t heard in 11 years of newborn photography. Words that needed to be heard. So I will never go back.
Here is a more of a look at my cozy little studio. It’s located behind my home in the Houston Heights — nice and central. The studio is on the second floor, so please keep this in mind when scheduling around your recovery if necessary.
