Session Prep: Creating Memorable Family and Sibling Photos
When it comes to family photo sessions with your newborn, there’s nothing better than capturing the precious moments between siblings (even if they're not always easy to come by). As an experienced Houston newborn photographer, I have a few tried-and-true methods for making these sessions run smoothly.
Fool-Proof Your Outfit Plans
Before we get into the session itself, let’s talk about outfits and traveling to the studio. If you've chosen an outfit that's prone to wrinkles for the older child, or if you plan on giving snacks on the drive over, bring the outfit with you to change into at the studio. If an outfit change might trigger a meltdown, choose something that won't wrinkle easily and arrive fully dressed.
Tip: If you're considering an outfit change at the studio, ensure that their travel clothes are something you wouldn't mind appearing in photos, just in case we lose the changing battle upon arrival. It happens!
You may think, "That all sounds great, but what should my kids wear for family newborn photos?" The studio makes coordination easier since it has a neutral background and I have many wraps for the baby to choose from that can match almost anything. Above all, keep it simple and comfortable. Newborns are so very tiny, and you want to freeze-frame all those precious details, so I recommend avoiding too many colors and designs.
Outfits for Family Newborn Photos
For newborns, I have all the wraps and accessories you will need. Some people prefer to have their newborn in a special outfit, but keep in mind that most newborn clothes are often big on them the first few weeks so be sure to try it on before the session.
For older siblings, choose coordinating colors or outfits that that are simple. Avoid overly busy patterns or logos, as they can be distracting in photos. Neutral tones always coordinate and photograph well and soft tones keep the photos light and airy.
Lastly, don't forget about yourself! As a new parent, you may not feel 100% just yet, but you will cherish these photos forever. Choose an outfit that makes you feel comfortable and confident, whether that's a flowy dress or a cozy sweater and jeans. Avoid busy patterns or bold colors that may take the focus away from your little one. Here is more information on what to wear for your newborn session.
Remember, the most important thing is to have fun and enjoy this special time with your family. So don't stress too much about outfits; just go with what feels right for you and your family.
The Perfect Setups for Sibling Photos
Next, to ease our way into the session, I’ll arrange a cozy setup on the ground to ensure everyone's comfort and safety, especially if the older siblings are five or under. I will position your newborn in front of the older sibling, eliminating their need to hold the baby. This staging usually produces priceless, heartwarming shots of the older child interacting with their new sibling, kissing, looking at the baby, or peeking at the camera.
If older siblings are involved, we can create a few interactive shots with them holding the baby, always with adult supervision nearby for safety and quick intervention if needed.
Note: I will never ask you to try a pose you are uncomfortable with, and newborn safety is my utmost priority under all circumstances. Please let me know if you have any questions, concerns, or special conditions to consider. I'd love to chat with you so you feel at ease about your session with me.
Adapting to the Circumstances
We all know that kids can be unpredictable, so if the sibling photos aren't going quite as planned, don't worry. We can always take a snack break. I always have snacks and refreshments on hand if you forget to bring any (I know you have a lot on your plate in this season). Refreshed and refueled, we can take another shot at the sibling photos or move on to capture the whole family together. Quite often, being in a group setting with mom or dad can serve as a reset button.
Setting Realistic Expectations for Sibling Sessions
Here's a hot take: approach the session with low expectations for sibling interaction. Then, you'll always be pleasantly surprised. Even if things aren't going perfectly, we can usually capture something delightful and authentic. No matter what happens, unless something truly unexpected comes up, I can almost always guarantee photos you'll fall in love with, even if it doesn't seem like it in the moment. Take a breath, trust the process, and let things unfold naturally. All will be ok, mama!
The Baby-Only Portion
Once we've collected an adorable set of sibling and family photos, we’ll focus on the baby. This part of the session may take up to two hours. As we all know, young children can get a bit restless. Moreover, it's best if the baby is asleep for these photos, and the energy of an older sibling can sometimes disrupt that peaceful slumber.
Older siblings are often very curious about all the ‘action’ going on. While their interest is oh so sweet, it can sometimes pose a safety concern while I'm trying to pose the baby. If possible, I suggest that after the family photos, an adult takes the siblings to a separate location.
Keeping the Siblings Occupied
A spouse or other family member can help by taking the child back home or to school if you live nearby. If you're not local, there are plenty of kid-friendly venues in the area. We've got a park right across the street, weather permitting, and several family-friendly restaurants or dessert spots like Jeni’s Ice Cream or Menchie’s. The Heights area is chock full of fun, family-friendly places to take kids, and you can find many of them listed here.
