Information for your In-Home Newborn Session

While I do the majority of newborn sessions in my studio, there are times when doing an in-home lifestyle sessions is the best choice for you. Doing the session in your home may be good for you if:

  • You have pets that you would like included in your session

  • You love the look of your home and/or nursery and would like it be showcased as the backdrop for your photoshoot

  • If your baby is older than the standard 2-3 weeks old for posed newborn sessions and you would like more candid and natural photos in their home setting

  • Are unable to climb up stairs at the time of your session (my studio is on the second floor)

  • Are weary about leaving your home with a newborn. (keep in mind that newborn safety is my top priority and these are the precautions I take in the studio)

More details about rates for each session are here and here is are more photos of a newborn lifestyle session.

If a session done in the home sounds like it’s the best fit for you, then below is some information to help you prepare for your session and know what to expect.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns about the session. Your baby’s safety and comfort is always my top priority. I can’t wait to meet your new little one!

  • Please collect any blankets, accessories or special props you would like incorporated in the photos to give the photos a personal touch. A reminder that I don’t bring along all the props and accessories to in-home sessions but I can bring one “posing” wrap to use if we need it.

  • Popular location spots for the family photos are: front porch, master bed, the nursery, against a blank wall, or any space in your home that is special to you. We can discuss which areas we will use based on the lighting in your home.

  • You don’t need to worry about cleaning up your entire home (I know you have your hands full right now!). Any areas we decide to use can be cleaned up in the setup process.

  • If you would like family/sibling photos, we can start out with these. That way if your partner would like to get to work or needs to take care of other siblings, everyone else can be done. This way we also get photos when your hair and makeup is still fresh. Then you are free to get comfortable for the remainder of the session. If we do photos of your baby and their sibling, doing the photos of them in the beginning also gives us a second chance to try again at the end in case the sibling isn’t into it at first.

  • As far as clothing goes, I know you may be in that weird in between stage between the maternity wear and pre-pregnancy wear b/c of swelling. So wear anything that you feel comfortable in, a flowy dress or top can be good. Just try to stay away from busy patterns if possible to keep focus on the baby. Amazon is a great place to find something for quick delivery with easy returns if you need something in a pinch.  Here is more information on what to wear.

  • I may take some close ups of each family member’s hands with the baby. Just a heads up in case any nail grooming is needed ahead of time. (This doesn’t mean you have to go out and get manicure if you don’t have time)

  • Feel free to feed your baby at any time that is best for you ahead of and during the session. We will work around your baby’s schedule. If you need to feed your baby upon arrival or at any point, you can take as much time as you need.

  • If you or any family member wear glasses, I may have you/them take them off if they don’t have anti reflective coating because otherwise the reflection may not allow me to see your/their eyes. Blue light coating is especially challenging to photograph. Or if you’re able to pop out the lenses, that will also work.

  • Please be sure to iron or steam clothing before your session to prevent wrinkles from showing in photos. I will not be able to photoshop wrinkles in clothing in post processing.

  • While I understand that having your hair done right now isn’t a top priority, please understand that hair is the hardest to fix in photoshop after the fact. I will do my best to move away strays from your face and place hair gently around you. Any major hair edits will be subject to extra editing fees or may not be fixed at all. These are edits due to things out of my control such as roots that need to be touched up or a hairstyle that didn’t look as intended. So please be sure you are comfortable with your hair before the session begins.

  • If you would like hair and makeup done just let me know and I’m happy to set recommend someone for you.

Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I’m looking forward to capturing some memories for you!
